This hymn text was written by Charles Wesley, one of the most prolific writers of English hymnody to date. This one, written in 1749, is but one of about 6,500 texts that Charles wrote. It is said to been written on the anniversary of his own conversion from, as a result of a comment made by one his influential Moravian friends who stated: “Had I a thousand tongues, I would praise Christ Jesus with all of them”

The tune for the hymn was written by Carl G. Glazer.

"I arranged this for a 13 piece brass ensemble: 4 tpts, 4 horns, 4 trombones and 1 tuba. It is a short arrangement, perhaps lasting not more than 1 minute. It should be played ‘lightly’ at a moderate tempo, between 96-112 for the quarter note pulse."
