Urlicht (Primeval Light) Sehr feierlich, aber schlicht (Very solemn, but simple) is from the fourth movement of Mahler's Symphony No. 2. Urlicht, is a Wunderhorn song, sung by an alto, which serves as an introduction to the Finale. The song, set in the remote key of D-flat major, illustrates the longing for relief from worldly woes.

This arrangement sounds very good with 5 trombones, but sounds even better with 10! Alternate parts for trombone part 1 are provided for higher instruments in the brass family. Please note that every part heard on the ScoreFlipper sound file was recorded by James Nova on various trombones.

Instrumentation:

Part 1 (Range to E5) - Trombone or alt. French Horn or alt. Flugelhorn
Part 2 (Range to Bb4) - Trombone
Part 3 - Trombone
Part 4 - Trombone/Bass Trombone
Part 5 (Range to Db1) - Bass Trombone or Tuba

The overall difficulty level is reduced to Grade 4 When French Horn or Flugelhorn are used for Part 1.
