The melody of “Prelude #1” was originally conceived as a solo for an oboe in an orchestra piece I was working on, but as other commitments and daily life intruded I put the piece on the back burner. Eventually I sat down at my piano and tried the melody out again, realizing it truly sounded better to my ear as a piano piece, and I began fleshing it out. At that point it began to flow and I had the piece completed within two or three sessions, inside of three days’ time. I was also inspired by a friend of mine with whom I was taking ballroom dance lessons at the time; she is a particularly graceful and beautiful person, as well as being an amateur pianist, so the piece also evokes my thoughts of her.
