"The Holly and the Ivy" carol that we are familiar with today has it origin in the 17th or 18th century. This carol takes a plant (holly) deeply entrenched in the pagan past and imbues it with Christian symbolism. Except for its appearance alongside holly in the opening stanza, ivy isn’t even mentioned in the song.
