Peace on Earth (Christmas Anthem), Op. 38, (1897) is an ambitious piece sets to E. H. Sears text, “It Came upon the Midnight Clear.” The work begins with an organ introduction over a tonic pedal. The second verse is a vehicle for a soprano solo and then a duet for soprano and alto. The anthem exemplifies her use of colorful, imaginative harmonies and smoothly voiced part writing. Beach’s gift for melody is also exemplified in this anthem.
