Blessed are all they that fear the Lord, is a verse anthem in which Gibbons uses the textural contrasts at the heart of the genre to create forward musical momentum. Typically a 17th Century verse anthem tended to alternate solo and tutti passages. Gibbons, who was key to the invention of the genre of the verse anthem, is able to generate high levels of contrast from the available forces.
