Johann Pachelbel (1653–1706), now famed for his Canon in D, was once esteemed primarily as a leading German organist and composer of sacred music. Among his contributions are numerous settings of the Magnificat, the Virgin Mary’s song of praise traditionally sung at Vespers. In Pachelbel’s time, Magnificat verses were often performed alternatim: plainchant interspersed with polyphonic or organ-based sections. His Magnificat versets, typically crafted as brief fugues, adorned the liturgy with intricate counterpoint that complemented the solemn chant.
