Commissioned by the Memorial School Honor Band in Hooksett, NH, the Hooksett Overture presents several musical ideas, all in the minor mode, and fashions them into a dynamic work achievable by intermediate level bands.
The piece begins with an aggressive march, employing mostly unison rhythms and melodies, followed by a contrasting middle section that emphasizes legato playing, part independence and melodic counterpoint. This ternary form work concludes by juxtaposing major themes from the previous sections.
The F minor key signature is easily accessible and there are few rhythmic difficulties beyond part independence. Other features of note are the easy solos sections for both Flute and Horn, third clarinet parts which remain under the break, and non-essential oboe and bassoon parts.
2 Flutes, Oboe, 3 Clarinets, Bassoon, 2 Alto Saxophones, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, 3 Trumpets, Horn, 2 Trombones, Baritone/Euphonium, Tuba, 4 Percussion.
