Henry Smart came from a family of musicians and was recognized as one of England’s finest organists and an accomplished composer. He served as organist at several prominent churches. Smart edited various hymn books and determined the harmonic structure of English hymns just as Bach did for German chorales. His skills as an improviser allowed him to keep playing organ after complete blindness set in at age fifty-two.
Lancashore was written for a music festival in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, commemorating the 350th anniversary of the Reformation in England. The tune is a basis of several hymns such as the “The Day of Resurrection.”
