Jacob Handl was Bohemia’s most famous Counter-Reformation musician. He was born Jakob Petelin in Reifnitz sometime between April 15 and July 31, 1550. Jacob Handl was the German form of his name. A devout Catholic, his life and music were burnished in the fire of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. His early musical training was that of a Cistercian monk at the Zisterzienser Monastery in Sittich, a monastery which led the Counter-Reformation in Bohemia. Thus, much of his music was published under Gallus, the Latin form of his name.
