God is Our Refuge and Strength, based on Psalm 46, was originally a motet for two four-voiced choirs with basso continuo. Its simplicity, both in harmonic and rhythmic structure makes it a very functional piece of music. Pachelbel’s choral works were usually written for a specific use in a church service rather than as free standing compositions. This transcription for brass quintet and organ should likewise prove to be a very functional piece of music and will lend itself well to church performances.
