Commissioned by the Take 5 Brass Quintet, "A Study in Contrasts" is a two movement work that provides a great opportunity for a moderately experienced brass quintet to perform twentieth century harmonies and textures in an accessible and exciting work. The first movement, a slow, pensive chorale, features many color and texture changes. Canonic entrances overlap, creating new harmonies and timbres in almost every measure. The second movement is exciting and energetic, featuring lines that dart up and and down through the ensemble. Ostinato rhythms clash with mixed meter to provide a sense of rhythmic vitality, offering a perfect contrast to the chorale like first movement. This piece is a "must have" for any ensemble dedicated to exposing their audiences to new and exciting music.
