This piece by the German composer Samuel Scheidt can be found in his Newe geistliche Concerten … prima pars (Halle, 1631). It was originally scored for Soprano, Tenor, Bass and organ continuo. “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern” [How beautifully the morning star shines] was orignally a chorale by by Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608). It originated as a form of music for normal use in pastoral services when times were full of tensions within religious and social history, but it rose far above these original circumstances. It is a chorale rich in gripping linguistic and melodic interest. Of course, you won’t find the linguistic aspect here but I think you will enjoy the beautiful melodic lines and counterpoint. It will make an excellent concert work.
