Carl Heinrich Biber (1681;-1749) was an Austrian composer, son of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber who wrote a fair amount of brass music that many trumpet players may be familiar with today. As the son of Salzburg?s dominant late 17th-century musical personality, Carl Heinrich?s career was by and large predetermined. ? bummer. As a composer Biber wrote exclusively for the church however he has, perhaps rightfully so, gone down in the annals of history as a far less important composer than his father. Many people have said to me, “Hey, Warren, why waste your time with Carl Biber? c’mon you can do better?”, to which I reply, “I don’t know.” That said, there?s something about this music that is so charming and fun that it just draws me in. At any rate, this is a quintet arrangement of a work that was originally written for 2 Oboes, 2 Violins and Basso continuo.
