The composer writes
March 3.1 is a lively piece based on the relationships of intervals, and I derived the thematic material from these relationships. A close interval of a major or minor 2nd indicates tension; whereas, the wider and more perfect intervals of 4ths or 5ths indicate release. Used in succession, they give the impression of harmony. Carefully observe the addition (or absence) of accidentals – for example, in the last bar, trombone has a B-natural, and trumpet 1 has a concert D-natural. They will clash with the quintet, but these notes are correct. In March 3.1, the tempo never changes, only the style, so please keep a brisk, steady tempo throughout.
