Contrapunctus in Blue is a minor blues written by noted Brass Quintet composer Paul Nagle, with an optional part for percussion. This jazzy chart starts as a C minor blues following the traditional 12 bar form. After a few choruses it opens up for an improvised solo from Trumpet 2 (a written solo is provided for non-improvisers). The solo is followed by a contrapuntal, classical fugue which unexpectedly changes the character of the piece, while still following the minor blues chord changes. Before long, we are back with a jazz shout chorus which drives us to the end of the piece. This is a real tasty chart in the tradition of Sammy Nestico…fun to play, cleverly written and entertaining for your audience.
Includes optional drum set part.
