Giovanni Gabrieli was probably born in 1556. His parents are unknown as is his place of birth. His prominent uncle, Andrea, recognized Giovanni’s unusual talent when he was quite young and carefully prepared him for a career as organist and composer. It was through his uncle and through Orlando di Lasso that Giovanni spent the 1570’s in the service of Duke Albrecht V in Munich. The introduction to one of his works published at that time characterized him as a “virtuoso of the Duke of Bavaria.”
