Fanfare for 3 Trumpets opens with a clash of dissonance as the brash opening theme sounds a stately and dignified alarum. The homophony of the opening theme gives way to polyphony as a more melodic second theme reflects pride with a bit of swagger. Counterpoint weaves the three independent trumpet lines into a unified fabric before a splash of the opening theme returns. The energy builds to a bright climax, followed by a brief variation on the “pride” theme. The opening fanfare then appears a third and final time, leading to a less dissonant and powerful conclusion.
