In Jeux de plein air (“Outdoor Games”), Germaine Tailleferre paints a bright, playful picture of children at play. The two short movements capture different moods — one easygoing and carefree, the other fast and full of energy. Originally written for two pianos and adapted here for trumpet ensemble, the piece sparkles with lively back-and-forth phrases and rhythmic playfulness. The first movement, La Tirelitentaine (dedicated to pianist Marcelle Meyer), feels like a relaxed walk in the sun — unhurried and full of charm. The second, Cache-cache Mitoula (for Juliette Méerovitch), races ahead with the excitement of a game of hide-and-seek, full of quick exchanges and bright bursts of sound. Written in Paris in 1917, this was one of Tailleferre’s early successes. Composer Erik Satie was so taken with it that he called Tailleferre his “musical daughter.”
