Variations on a Hymn was written for Phil’s good friend and colleague, Steve Hendrickson, who is the principal trumpet of the National Symphony Orchestra. A devoted Lutheran, Steve often performs in his church, playing works for trumpet and organ. The hymn from which these variations are taken, Nun danket alle Gott, was written by the Lutheran Pastor Martin Rinkhart in 1636 and has been a staple in the Lutheran hymnbook for generations. J.S. Bach based some of his church compositions on this tune and it has been arranged and transcribed for many instruments throughout the years. Phil’s setting is in a modern style juxtaposing contemporary rhythms and harmonies with the traditional hymn tune.
Recorded and released on “The Lyrical Trumpet 2“.
