When a colleague approached me about composing an original tune for a historical film on Montana’s bears, she mentioned wanting something with the lively energy of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” Inspired by that classic swing feel—and by the playful image of bears, I crafted “Boppin’ the Bear” starts out with a nod to Elvis' “Teddy Bear”. The lead line is shared with Alto and Trumpet, with the other horns playing a supporting role.
The A section is used for open solos, with a fun stop time solo break included. May be played with guitar, piano or both.
