"Am Waldesbach" (By the Forest Brook) by Paul Wetzger is a showpiece for flute that would fit onto any college recital. Paul Wetzger (1870–1937) was a German flutist and composer born in Dahme, near Lübeck. His earliest musical instruction was on the violin, under the guidance of a local music director, before he discovered his true affinity for the flute. By the age of fifteen, he had already debuted in a concert at Dahme’s principal church and served as second flutist in the town’s municipal orchestra. Wetzger later rose to the position of principal flutist in the Essen Municipal Orchestra and also taught at the Essen Conservatory. Throughout his career, he composed extensively for the flute—his primary instrument—and produced several chamber works, in addition to editing the music of noted French flutist-composer Jules Demersseman.
Among Wetzger’s contributions to the repertoire, Am Waldesbach (By the Forest Brook), an idyll for flute and either orchestra or piano, stands out as a particularly enchanting piece. It gained early renown through the artistry of the celebrated French flutist Marcel Moyse, who recorded it in 1935 for French Columbia. Over time, Am Waldesbach has secured its place as a beloved teaching piece, appearing prominently in Toshio Takahashi’s influential Suzuki Flute Method. .
