Toccata is an original composition in the tradition of the Baroque masters who wrote these short compositions in order to showcase their technical virtuosity, usually on the keyboard. The term was also used to indicate a brass fanfare, starting around the time of Monteverdi’s Orfeo in the 1600s. This work is meant to serve both purposes as it shows off both the flashy techniques of the trumpet and organ, while setting a declamatory tone for the beginning of the CD "Lyrical Trumpet". The contrasting middle section of this piece foreshadows the melodic content of the bulk of the recording.

Parts for C Trumpet, D trumpet and Piccolo Trumpet in A are included.
