Performance Notes

The first movement should begin fairly loudly and briskly. The tempo at 27 is exactly the tempo at the introduction. The triplet in the Tuba a, bar 34 establishes the tempo for the 3/4 that follows. At bar 70, the measure remains the same in that the new quarter-note is equal to the previous dotted quarter. On the D.C., the quarter note remains the same. At the Coda, the 2/ 4 is again equal to a bar of 3/4.

The second movement should be quite slow and as soft as possible without loss of balance and firmness. The quarter - note remains the same.

The third movement begins in one to the bar and should be bright. In all of the meter changes {except the 3/8) the measure remains the same. This relationship is most difficult at bar 59 and may require some rehearsal.

The fourth movement is in 6/8 for the most pan and should be played at a moderately bright tempo. The dotted notes are designed to create a 2/4 feeling and should be played aggressively.
