Mahler began writing his Fifth Symphony in 1901, just months after suffering a nearly fatal hemorrhage. It was premiered October 18, 1904 in Cologne and conducted by the composer. Six months later it was premiered in the United States by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

This transcription preserves most of Mahler's own brilliant brass writing while exploring alternate colors and textures to account for music assigned to woodwinds and strings.
