“The Pines of Rome (1924) is the second of Respighi's trilogy of tone poems inspired by his impressions of Rome, along with Fountains of Rome (1917) and Roman Festivals (1928). The suite comprises four movements, each depicting pine trees located in different areas in the city of Rome at different times of the day.

 

 

Originally for orchestra, Respighi also made a version for 2 pianos in 1925. An MP3 of the nightingale song (to be played at the end of the Pines of the Janiculum) is readily available.”
